"Color + Abstraction"
June 15 - July 23, 2023
Royse Contemporary is proud to present Color + Abstraction, a group exhibition examining color and abstraction, reflecting upon the effects both create within artwork. Color and abstraction are brilliant tools allowing artists to freely express themselves, explore and share their vision while connecting with viewers.
As renowned artist Piet Mondrian once said, "abstract art is not the creation of another reality but the true vision of reality." These artists are utilizing abstraction as a form of expression as well as independence from artistic constraints as they explore their subject and medium.
While the emphasis on color with either the inclusion or omission of within their work is important as there is often an emotional connection and response while viewing color. "Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions," said renowned artist, Pablo Picasso.
Royse has assembled an intriguing collection of work by artists working in an array of mediums including painting, drawing, photography, and mixed media. This exhibition showcases the work of six noteworthy Arizona artists including: Cherie Buck-Hutchison Gerry Groeber, Joe Ray, Daniel Shepherd, Marilyn Szabo, Casey Wakefield. Each artist approaches their work in an original way, and we are delighted to bring this dynamic collection of work to Royse Contemporary.
The Color + Abstraction exhibition will open to the public Thursday, June 15, 2023 from 6:00 to 9:00pm. We will host a special artist reception with an opportunity to meet the artists, along with refreshments and treats. Color + Abstraction will be on display at Royse Contemporary from June 15 through July 23, 2023.
"MEXICANISMO"
April 13 - June 11, 2023
Royse Contemporary is excited to present "MEXICANISMO", the solo exhibition of renowned artist Gennaro Garcia. This exhibition showcases a dynamic and vivid multi-media collection of work that includes paintings and monosilk prints.
"MEXICANISMO" highlights the artist's distinctive style, fresh voice, engaging subject matter and vivid creations. "Art sets me free and allows me to share my passion", states Garcia.
He has masterfully fused the vibrant color palette of his childhood in Mexico with his impeccable world-class skill, utilizing a combination of techniques, blending old and new world. "Striving to create art in every technique, style, color, texture, always evolving within his art", states Curator, Nicole Royse. Royse goes on to say "He Infuses his work with familiar imagery and subjects that are inspired by his dual identities as both Mexican and American giving us a true authentic Latino immigrant perspective."
Garcia is a native of San Luis, Sonora, Mexico, migrating to Arizona in his early twenties with drive, passion and the desire to create art. His work is featured in 10 different galleries in both the United States and Mexico and numerous private collections, including representation by Royse Contemporary in Scottsdale. His work has been exhibited in more than 80 exhibitions in the last 5 years. Garcia is the recipient of several awards including the Masters of the Southwest Award presented by the Phoenix Home & Garden and the Hispanic Heritage Award presented by Cox Communications and the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is the resident artist at Xico Inc.- Latin & Native American Arts Organization.
As a seasoned artist, advocate, and chef he has brilliantly melded together all of his passions. He has bridged his love and passion for the arts and the culinary world by venturing into the restaurant design field. He has worked on many restaurants: Barrio Queen, Tio Chano, El Sonorense, Ghost Ranch, Salt, Galaxy Taco and is the Co-Owner of Taco Chelo in Downtown Phoenix.
This exhibition will be on display at Royse Contemporary through June 11, 2023.
"An Intimate Look In"
March 2 - April 2, 2023
Royse Contemporary is excited to present "An Intimate Look In", a two person exhibition showcasing the latest works of photorealistic oil painter Cam DeCaussin and the portrait photography of Marilyn Szabo. This exhibition presents masterful artworks, reflecting upon the influences of Arizona, the desert, its people, and the prevalence of midcentury architecture here in the valley.
When creating their work each artist utilizes strong imagery, an engaging style, and a compelling original voice. They have an incredible ability to capture the pure beauty and essence of their subject in an authentic and stirring way, while also connecting with their viewers. "We are elated to showcase these talented artists with the community, highlighting their latest collections of work and artistry," states Curator, Nicole Royse.
Cam DeCaussin is a highly skilled oil painter with a keen eye for detail and an incredible ability to capture the energy and mystery within his subjects. His artwork has a feel of voyeurism, but at the same time they are personal and relatable. His Paintings feature some of Phoenix’s most distinct midcentury homes, with people coming or going in the liminal space between. His work has been inspired and influenced by the work of painter Edward Hopper and photographer Gregory Crewdson. Formally trained in the arts receiving his Bachelors of Fine Art in Illustration from Grand Valley State University and Masters of Fine Art in Painting and Drawing from Arizona State University. His work has been featured in numerous group and solo exhibitions including: AZ Biennial Tucson Museum of Art, Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, and Renmin University. His work can be found in many private collections across the United States.
Marilyn Szabo is a true creative force in Arizona culture and has worked for over twenty-five years as a photographer. Her photography captures a variety of people locally and abroad, evoking a sense of nostalgia and truth. Each piece is technically crafted, emotive, and one can appreciate the strong connection and collaboration between photographer and subject. She received her Bachelors in History from Virginia Commonwealth University with a minor in Photography. As artist, curator and historian Szabo published book At Work in Arizona: the First 100, funded by Alliance Bank of Arizona featuring 168 pages including 80 of Szabo’s photographs, culminating a 15 year endeavor. Her work has garnered many prestigious awards and grants, can be found in many public and private collections and has been exhibited both nationally and internationally.
The “An Intimate Look In” will open to the public Thursday, March 2, 2023 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, coinciding with the Scottsdale ArtWalk, with a special reception celebrating the artists. This exhibition will be on display at Royse Contemporary through April 2, 2023.
"Retrospective of Fred Tieken"

Royse Contemporary is honored to present the "Retrospective of Fred Tieken", highlighting his extraordinary work and life. This exhibition will feature a broad selection of his work throughout his artistic career, concluding with his final works never before exhibited. Royse has chosen an iconic assortment of his mixed media and digital works that showcase his expressionistic and painterly style that he brilliantly blended with his poignant commentary and humor.
As Fred would say, "Painting is like baring my soul to the world." His level of emotional commitment is beautifully and vividly demonstrated in his work. “Illuminating his love of color and line and his diverse subject matter, Tieken emphasizes personal subjects and shares experiences with his viewers. His artwork offers wry social observations and smart symbolism, as well as a brief glimpse into his fascinating world, fueled by his passion for life, art, and music.
During his career he worked between his two beautiful studios in Paradise Valley, Arizona and Venice Beach, California. Tieken's work was featured in more than 60 juried exhibitions and one-person shows from coast-to-coast. He also exhibited in several major art fairs including Aqua Art Miami, XContemporary, Spectrum Miami, LA Art Show and Palm Springs Fine Art Fair. He produced his final body of work featuring two digital art series: "ER” and "Brainstorm” in 2018, which we were honored to showcase and host in Tieken’s final exhibition "Art, Music, Life, Repeat" in October 2019 at Royse Contemporary.
After several daunting years filled with medical battles, Fred Tieken passed away on April 18, 2022 and his beloved wife and partner Gail Tieken passed away on May 29, 2022. The Tieken’s were incredible people and so important to the art community here in Arizona and California, both through his artwork and their philanthropy. Royse Contemporary built a long-term personal and professional relationship with the Tieken’s, sharing “they were an incredible couple whose commitment to the arts and building a stronger art community here in Arizona was very important to them, and it has been an honor to work with them on numerous projects over these last 12 years,” states Royse.
"Consideration of Color"

Royse Contemporary is proud to present Consideration of Color, a group exhibition examining color, reflecting upon the effects color creates within both the artist and viewer. Color is a brilliant tool allowing artists to further express themselves, as well as a way to connect with its viewers. As renowned artist Wassily Kandinsky once said, “Color is a power which directly influences the soul,” awakening our senses on multiple levels.
Royse has assembled an intriguing collection of work by artists working in an array of mediums including painting, drawing and mixed media. This exhibition showcases the work of six noteworthy artists including: Cam DeCaussin, Fausto Fernandez, Casey Wakefield, Damian Jim, Becky Spradling and Barbara Kemp Cowlin. Each artist approaches their work in an original way, and we are delighted to bring this enchanting collection of work to Royse Contemporary.
We seek to highlight artists whose work offers a vibrancy, distinctive voice and vitality that will evoke and captivate a wide audience," remarks Royse. “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way - things I had no words for, Georgia O’Keeffe. Let us consider the artists inclusion or omission of color within their work, the emotional connection and response we may experience when we view colors.
The Consideration of Color exhibition will open to the public Thursday, December 1, 2022 from 6:00 to 9:00pm. We will host a special artist reception on Thursday, December 8 from 6:00 to 8:00pm, coinciding with the “Scottsdazzle Artwalk” with a wonderful evening of art, the opportunity to meet the artists, along with refreshments and treats. Consideration of Color will be on display at Royse Contemporary from December 1, 2022 through January 8, 2023.
"Lens Versus Brush"
October 13 - November 27, 2022
Royse Contemporary traverses the new art season and welcomes fall with "Lens Versus Brush". This exhibition highlights a stimulating group of artists working in painting, photography or both. Throughout history people have expressed favoritism for a particular art form, for some it is painting, others it is photography, some mixed media. Renowned Writer and Activist, Susan Sontag once said “The Painter Constructs, the Photographer Discloses,” but is this really as black and white as that? This topic has been debated at length from numerous essays, to panels, to competitions and many exhibitions, with artists, academics and collectors all taking various stances.
Royse has selected an enticing collection of artworks for "Lens Versus Brush", aiming to create an exciting dialogue further fueling consideration to compare, contrast, and question these ideals and preferences. A unique assortment of original paintings, photography and mixed media artworks have been accumulated from artists creating here in Arizona. This exhibition features work from artists: James Angel, Cam DeCaussin, Cherie Buck-Hutchison, Peter Brian Klein, Marilyn Szabo, Daniel Shepherd, Casey Wakefield, and special guest artist JB Snyder.
The essence of each artwork, the true skill of the artists, and the genuine beauty of their art forms is emotive and captivating. “I believe each artist brings their own voice, story and style to each work of art created,” states Royse. No matter what form the artist has chosen to express their creativity, all art forms are truly important in their own right. Art is more than just its forms, but rather the importance of the artist. Internationally known photographer and educator, Jack Welpott stated, “In my view, photography and painting really share one history. The influences that work on one, work on the other.” Perhaps we must blur the lines between Photography or Painting and simply embrace the art and creative process itself.
"Summer Spectacular"

Royse Contemporary welcomes the annual "Summer Spectacular" group exhibition featuring our stable of artists, along with a several special guest artists. Celebrating our 5 year Anniversary with a dynamic and diverse collection of original artwork in a variety of mediums. "It is my honor to work with this talented group of artists, with their captivating styles, energetic imagery and vibrant color palettes ," declares owner/curator Nicole Royse. Each artist offers a distinctive voice, ingenuity, accomplished resume.

We are excited to include the works of our special guest artists: Monica Aissa Martinez, Ron Bimrose, Brenda Edwards, Dan Pederson, Joe Ray and James Anthony Peters. "Reality Versus Imagination"

Royse Contemporary is pleased to present "Reality Versus Imagination", a dynamic group exhibition examining the ideas of reality verses imagination while reflecting upon the artists perspective and creative process. Showcasing seven noteworthy male artists: James Angel, Cam DeCaussin, Gennaro Garcia, Peter Brian Klein, James Anthony Peters, Joe Ray, Daniel Shepherd.
Typically, one would define “Reality” as the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them.” While "Imagination" emphasizes the artist's ability to produce images and ideas without any immediate input of the senses. Owner/Curator, Nicole Royse has selected artists who both typify and transcend these categories, creating powerful work that offers a mastery of medium, and unique perspectives. This exhibition offers an eclectic selection of work that is both captivating and authentic. The artists are working in an array of mediums including collage, drawing, painting, photography, and mixed media.
“Reality Versus Imagination” aims to create a dialog and connection with these artists while highlighting their use of imagery, diverse styles, and strong voice. Although each artist’s work may appear aesthetically different Royse has created an exciting dialog for the artists through the power of their imagery, their originality and the overall vitality that the works possesses.
"Feminine Spirit: Perseverance, Reflection & Heart"

Royse Contemporary is excited to present "Feminine Spirit", a small group exhibition showcasing five renowned local female artists. The artists featured will include: Cherie Buck-Hutchison, Marilyn Szabo, Charmagne Vasquez, Casey Wakefield, and Kris Manzanares. Feminine spirit encompasses the ideals that women house incredible power, ability, and growth. Growth, including physical, emotional, or spiritual, that they share and bring to the world. "Women possess a special strength in the depths of their soul. It balances the energies and perspectives in life. It brings perseverance, reflection and heart to everything women do," states Curator, Nicole Royse.
An alluring group of artists that have an incredible energy, originality, and a distinctive voice have been selected. Each bringing their own story to the table, creating riveting enigmatic work. This exhibition highlights each artist's style, engaging medium, and unique imagery, working with a variety of mediums including painting, photography, mixed media and sculpture. An excellent collection of work has been assembled from this talented group of artists. Aesthetically different but have an undeniable bond and vitality that connects their work. "Feminine Spirit" offers artwork that is visceral, authentic and engaging, states Royse.

"At Home"

Royse Contemporary is excited to present "at home", featuring the much anticipated solo exhibition of Cam DeCaussin. Presenting masterful artwork that emphasizes the beauty of the Arizona sky, midcentury architecture and the desert. Accentuating the artist's use of imagery, engaging style, and a strong voice that truly connects with his viewers," states Curator, Nicole Royse. One of the biggest changes to the artist's work comes from becoming a parent, in regard to painting time and efficiency which has become even more important. We also see changes in his themes, incorporating the struggles, worries, and questions of parenthood.
"During Covid-19, there were several articles that came out about how we were all living in an Edward Hopper painting, and I have always related to Hopper's work, the quiet solitude, and isolation, states DeCaussin. "While we all were left at home, I could not find the energy or interest to paint, especially what I had always loved to, there was a heightened awareness of the mundane. As the world has slowly begun to reopen and things begin to speed back up, I feel we quickly have lost that ability to notice the liminal spaces", further explains the artist.
Cam DeCaussin is a highly skilled oil painter with a keen eye for detail and an incredible ability to capture the energy and mystery within his subjects. His work is inspired by empty, quiet living spaces and their ability to express themes of solace, sadness, separation and contemplation, influenced by the work of painter Edward Hopper and photographer Gregory Crewdson.
Formally trained in the arts receiving his Bachelors of Fine Art in Illustration from Grand Valley State University and Masters of Fine Art in Painting and Drawing from Arizona State University. His work has been featured in numerous group and solo exhibitions including: AZ Biennial Tucson Museum of Art, Fine Art Complex 1101, Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, and Renmin University.

"Everything Belongs to the Sun"

Royse Contemporary is excited to present "Everything Belongs to the Sun", showcasing the last painting collection of Daniel Shepherd. Inspiration for this new work was "a new beginning, our world is different than it was and I wanted to create a vibrant colorful promise of hope and tranquility."Shepherd has created a beautiful collection of minimal abstract paintings with an evocative use of color that engages the viewers senses, states Curator, Nicole Royse.
Shepherd is a self-taught artist based in Phoenix who is creating vibrant abstract paintings and fantastic vintage collages. His work is included in private collections around the world and he has exhibited his work extensively throughout Arizona and California. Shepherd is currently represented by Royse Contemporary in Scottsdale Arizona . His work has been featured in numerous publications both online and in print including: OutVoicePhoenix, Phoenix Magazine, Visual Art Source, Arizona Foothills Magazine, Java Magazine, and Phoenix New Times.
"Reverence of Place & Time"

Royse Contemporary is thrilled to present " Reverence of Place & Time”, the highly anticipated solo exhibition of Peter Brian Klein. Debuting his latest collection of brilliant color photography capturing the majestic beauty of Northern Arizona. A true master of his craft, and Klein has created stunning color dual layered photographic prints on polished acrylic. “Each image transcends traditional landscape photography, transporting the viewer to this splendid and magical place, capturing the true evocative beauty of nature in each image,” states Nicole Royse, Curator.
The eroded volcanic remains of the San Francisco Peaks mark the highest point of elevation in Arizona, a sacred sight revered by Native Americans. As a lifelong native Klein wanted to capture the affinity he has for Northern Arizona, while expressing his reverence for the indigenous people and the cultural significance that it represents. “Evolving from the ashes of ancient volcanic devastation, this place represents something quite different to me than it does to the Hopi of Black Mesa, we are equally in awe of the San Francisco Peaks and the landscapes they loom over.” In his latest collection, he has captured breathtaking images of Lockett Meadow during the Summer solstice, as an expression of time and gratitude for the solace he found in their shadows. “We all must all work together to protect this majestic natural wonder that we have come to admire,” declares Klein.
Klein was born, raised and educated in Phoenix, Arizona, falling in love with photography at a young age. His life long journey of learning and exploring the photographic process began with an initial education using film and darkroom printing. Klein feels that art is a communicative device that should convey, and even at times, create emotion.

"Contrails and Peripheries"

Royse Contemporary is thrilled to present the highly anticipated solo exhibition of Charmagne Vasquez Coe, “Contrails and Peripheries”. The exhibition is titled after a large work completed in 2020. The theme reflects on the state of being present, while acknowledging the past, and seeing glimpses of future. We are here right now, creating. These striking works were made in live time of instability, despair, solitude, upheaval, reawakenings, planning, transition, new love, relocating, they are her physical expressions of experiences. “Contrails and Peripheries” is a passionate and poignant exhibition that draws the viewer into each unique work. The emotion and imagery captured within the pieces are relevant in our current turbulent times”, states Owner/Curator, Nicole Royse.
She often creates works in her home studio or en plein air, with her recent direction of art focusing on assemblage and abstract surrealism across many media. She relies on an intuitive, spontaneous approach to guide her on her creation. The element of surprise is critical while weaving together two and three-dimensional narratives. These narratives can be highly abstracted, while imbedding characters and other identifiable subjects. Ephemera from her home, travels and nature are enmeshed and pushing out from the canvas surface.
This exhibition showcases an emotive and vibrant new collection that highlights the artist’s direct response to everyday life happenings. “Be it living during this complex era of political turmoil and covid-19, a pheasant who took refuge in my yard or appreciating experiences with my loved ones in this city.” She goes on to say that “these are my painted words, painted breaths, painted determination. I wish to keep creating with what is right now.”
Charmagne Vasquez Coe is a native Arizonan artist, growing up in mid-town Phoenix in a family of creatives who taught her many art forms. She earned a BA in elementary education and a minor in art from Northern Arizona University. She exhibited her paintings and drawings internationally and her work can be found in numerous publications, amongst others, Creative Quarterly, Phoenix Magazine, Luxe Interiors + Design and Utne Reader. Her work is represented by Royse Contemporary, she regularly participates in the Downtown Phoenix art community and is actively involved in several art organizations.
"Mexicano on Main Street

This exhibition showcases a dynamic and vivid multi-media collection of work, including paintings, monosilk prints, along with debuting some of his latest Talavera Collection from Puebla in collaboration with Uriarte talavera. This show highlights the artist's distinctive style, fresh voice, engaging subject matter and vivid creations. "Art sets me free and allows me to share my passion", states Garcia who strives to create art in every technique, style, color, texture, always evolving within his art.
He infuses his work with familiar imagery and subjects that are inspired by his dual identities as both Mexican and American giving us a true authentic Latino immigrant perspective with his latest show, states Curator, Nicole Royse. Garcia has masterfully fused the vibrant color palette of his childhood in Mexico with his impeccable world-class skill, utilizing a combination of Italian techniques working with oils, acrylics, and plaster, blending old and new world. "Art is addictive and therapeutic, it is the best way to communicate the way I feel, think, love", affirms Garcia.
Garcia is a native of San Luis, Sonora, Mexico, migrating to Arizona in his early twenties with drive, passion and the desire to create art. His work is featured in 10 different galleries in both the United States and Mexico and numerous private collections, including representation by Royse Contemporary in Scottsdale. He is the recipient of several awards including the Masters of the Southwest Award, presented by the Phoenix Home & Garden and most recently the Hispanic Heritage Award presented by Cox Communications and the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is also the resident artist at Xico Inc.- Latin & Native American Arts Organization.
As a seasoned artist, advocate, and chef he has brilliantly melded together all of his passions, and in 2018 Garcia partnered with Aaron Chamberlin to open Taco Chelo in Downtown Phoenix, highlighting the traditions of Mexican food and his artwork. His work is featured in many commercial and residential interiors, handling the interior design of over a dozen restaurants that feature his art and furniture design: including Barrio Queen, Casa De Julia, Ghost Ranch and Taco Chelo. His work has been exhibited in more than 80 exhibitions in the last 5 years. He has been featured in numerous local and national publications including: Phoenix Home & Garden, Phoenix Magazine, Arizona Republic, and Univision.
"Mexicano on Main Street" will open to the public Thursday, January 21, 2021 from 6-9pm coinciding with the Scottsdale ArtWalk, plus an opportunity to meet the artist and curator. This wonderful exhibition will be on display at Royse Contemporary until February 14, 2021.
"Into Another Light"

Royse Contemporary is thrilled to present "Into Another Light", the debut solo exhibition of Casey Wakefield. The essence of the artist's work and this new collection is to draw attention to good and to pull people forward while creating optimism, unity, peace, and tranquility through dreamy, meditative artwork. The artist's evocative use of color engages the viewers senses, while Wakefield seeks to encourage people to look forward and choose to be hopeful despite the challenges of 2020. "Into Another Light is a positive and touching exhibition that urges the viewer to look to the future and the good, especially relevant in our current turbulent times", states Owner/Curator, Nicole Royse.
Creating compositions of color, some predictable and others unpredictable, with layers of acrylic ink, collage, acrylic paint, finished with oil paint. A truly contemplative and organic transformation of colors, drips, and marks captured in abstract form on canvas, that elicits create an emotional connection for someone. "I am inspired by groupings of color that catch my eye and the essence of a memory or experience, music, quote, or poem. Wakefield goes on to say "I find that the joy of painting is to watch the abstract emerge into something that evolves from the process and in the end creates an emotional connection for the viewer."
Raised in a small midwestern town in central Illinois, she would go on to graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Illinois State University. She obtained her Master of Arts in Elementary Education from University of Phoenix. Wakefield would go on to study painting at the Milan Art Institute, where she discovered her passion for color and letting the process of painting determine the outcome in abstract form. She is currently represented by Royse Contemporary in Scottsdale. Her work has been featured in both national and international publications including House and Garden, Phoenix Home and Garden magazine, Scottsdale Independent, and Java Magazine.

"Reconstructed"

Royse Contemporary is excited to present our new solo exhibition "Reconstructed", showcasing the vintage collages of Daniel Shepherd. On Monday, June 1, 2020 we will host a special virtual reception (due to the current ongoing covid-19 pandemic).
For the last six years, Shepherd and Royse have collaborated on exciting exhibitions that showcase the artist's unique and often outlandish vintage collages captivating audiences along the way. "I am delighted to bring this riveting collection of collages by Shepherd to Royse Contemporary, he continues to evolve as an artist while maintaining his distinctive voice, brilliant style and that element of surprise that engages his viewers. This exhibition presents work that takes elements typically considered visually appealing that are then reconstructed by the artist and presented in a way that may be considered unnerving or creepy, while still retaining all the grace, elegance and natural beauty of their original forms.
"When I began work on this show, I wanted to approach it differently than I have with past exhibitions. My thought this time was to work smaller and in a sense from a more minimalist point of view", states Shepherd. The artist's organic style allows him to combine a variety of images to create original and interesting work, while producing his collages entirely from repurposed materials. Being able to reuse these materials really excites Shepherd, who loves the idea of these "things" which once served a specific use now years later are being reused for something completely different.
Shepherd is a self-taught artist based in Phoenix who is creating vibrant abstract paintings and fantastic collages. His work is included in private collections around the world and he has exhibited his work extensively throughout Arizona and California. Recently Shepherd has exhibited at Chartreuse Gallery, Bokeh Gallery, Willo North Gallery, Off Madison Avenue and his work is currently represented by Royse Contemporary. His work has been featured in numerous publications both online and in print including: Phoenix Magazine, Visual Art Source, Arizona Foothills Magazine, Java Magazine, and Phoenix New Times.
"Midcentury in the Desert"

Royse Contemporary is excited to present "Midcentury in the Desert", a two person exhibition showcasing the photorealistic oil paintings of Cam DeCaussin and the black and white photography of Marilyn Szabo. This exhibition reflects upon the influences and prevalence of midcentury architecture here in the desert of Arizona. Presenting masterful artwork that highlights the beauty of the architecture and desert, accentuating the artist's use of imagery, engaging style, and strong voice. "We are honored to showcase the work of these talented artists, each creating phenomenal work, capturing the beauty and essence of the architecture within the landscape, truly connecting with their viewers," states Curator, Nicole Royse.
Cam DeCaussin is a highly skilled oil painter with a keen eye for detail and an incredible ability to capture the energy and mystery within his subjects. His work is inspired by empty, quiet living spaces and their ability to express themes of solace, sadness, separation and contemplation, influenced by the work of painter Edward Hopper and photographer Gregory Crewdson. Formally trained in the arts receiving his Bachelor's of Fine Art in Illustration from Grand Valley State University and Masters of Fine Art in Painting and Drawing from Arizona State University. His work has been featured in numerous group and solo exhibitions including: AZ Biennial Tucson Museum of Art, Fine Art Complex 1101, Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, and Renmin University. His work has been featured in such publications as: New American Painting West Competition, Inverse Conversations 2015, and Creative Quarterly 20.
Marilyn Szabo is a true creative force in Arizona culture and has worked for over twenty-five years as a photographer. Her photographic subjects vary and her work has been praised for its depth, craftsmanship and versatility. She received her Bachelors in History from Virginia Commonwealth University with a minor in Photography. Her work has been featured in numerous publications including Triumph of Our Communities, Black and White, and Focus, In/Sights: Self-Portraits by Women edited by Joyce Tenneson Cohen. Szabo has exhibited both nationally and internationally and can be found in many public and private collections. Her work has garnered prestigious awards and grants (including five from the arts commission), plus she received the Alligator Juniper's 2010 National Photography Award and cover.

Royse Contemporary is thrilled to present “Art, Music, Life, Repeat”, the solo exhibition of Fred Tieken. This exhibition will feature a selection of his latest mixed media and digital works, showcasing his expressionistic and painterly style, love of color and line, diverse subject matter, all blended with his poignant commentary. "Painting is like baring my soul to the world," states Tieken whose level of emotional commitment is beautifully and vividly demonstrated in his work.
After a daunting 2018 filled with medical battles, Tieken has returned full force to his art, producing two exciting new bodies of work “ER” and “Brainstorm” series. Tieken’s work highlights personal subjects and shares experiences with his viewer through irony and wit,” states curator Nicole Royse. His art offers wry social observations and smart symbolism, as well as a brief glimpse into his fascinating world, fueled by his passion for life, art, and music.
Working from his two studios in Paradise Valley, Arizona and Venice Beach, California, Tieken's work has been featured in more than 60 juried exhibitions and one-person shows from coast-to-coast. He also has shown in major art fairs including Aqua Art Miami, XContemporary, Spectrum Miami, LA Art Show and Palm Springs Fine Art Fair. Next up Tieken is excited to be returning to the LA Art Show in February 2020.

"Both Directions At Once", the solo exhibition of Daniel Shepherd

Royse Contemporary is proud to present Both Directions at Once, the solo exhibition of Daniel Shepherd. Shepherd has created a radiant collection of abstract paintings that are contemplative and minimalist in style. With this exhibition the artist wanted to return to painting after a brief hiatus of focusing on his collage work, reexamining his work from the past. “With this show I wanted to do a lot more with color and shape, letting each piece guide me, I have found a renewed joy of paintings that I believe is obvious in each piece in the new collection,” states Shepherd.
His work utilizes acrylic paint on repurposed wood panels, and he refers to his painting technique as “Ambient Painting” working with bright and saturated colors that often collide with pastels or minimal abstractions becoming more expansive with a plaintive serenity."I am elated to bring this mesmeric collection of Shepherd's newest abstract paintings to Royse Contemporary, she goes on to say, "through the years of working with this artist, his work has continued to evolve while maintaining its vibrancy, energy, and distinctive voice that has always captivated his viewers."

Royse Contemporary is proud to present Shades of Evening, the solo exhibition of Cam DeCaussin. His work is inspired by empty, quiet living spaces and their ability to express themes of solace, sadness, separation and contemplation. Primarily focusing on moments within neighborhood homes during the dawn and dusk hours of the day, these brief moments showcase when life exists within. “I am drawn to the physiological response to flirt with voyeurism, each painting acts as a living television screen, a reminder that we truly are not the center of our own universe; that we are but background actors in an infinite amount of story lines, and we exist in that story often for brief seconds,” states DeCaussin.
DeCaussin says, “His work has been greatly influenced by the work of painter Edward Hopper and photographer Gregory Crewdson, whose powerful work share similar themes.” DeCaussin is a skilled oil painter with a keen eye for detail says, Curator Nicole Royse with an incredible ability to capture such energy and mystery within his subjects, going on to say, “Over the last few years I have had the pleasure of watching DeCaussin work evolve and it is truly an honor to be exhibiting his work at Royse Contemporary this November.”
DeCaussin was formally trained receiving his Bachelor’s of Fine Art in Illustration from Grand Valley State University eventually moving to Arizona where he received his Masters Fine Art in Painting and Drawing from Arizona State University. Royse Contemporary is proud to present Reinventing Abstraction, a small group exhibition highlighting abstract art that is visceral, authentic and engaging. Reinventing Abstraction highlights a thought-provoking collection of work from four talented artists that may appear aesthetically different, but have an undeniable connection and energy that unites their work.
Abstract art is typically defined as attempting not to represent external reality, but instead seeking to achieve its effect by utilizing shapes, forms, colors, and textures. Encapsulating all of these elements and more this exhibition offers a striking selection of paintings, drawings, and mixed media works by 4 regional contemporary female artists, including Barbara Kemp Cowlin, Victoria James, Jessica Palomo, and Diane Sanborn.
Curator, Nicole Royse selected an enthralling group of artists that have an incredible energy along with originality, a distinctive voice, and accomplished work. Each artist creates alluring yet enigmatic work exploring the concepts of form, space, color and line while continuing to examine the relationship between abstraction and representation. The artists’ lives and work share the common bond and passion for art and the influence of the southwest. The work created is compelling and authentic with original styles and captivating subject matter, resulting in art that produces meaning relevant to contemporary issues and life today.
Our History showcases the work of 7 regional contemporary artists, which include Gennaro Garcia, Fausto Fernandez, Frank Gonzales, Cherie Buck-Hutchison, Charmagne Coe, Daniel Shepherd, and Marilyn Szabo. The exhibition will feature a diverse selection of work including painting, drawing, photography, collage, and mixed media highlighting the artists’ energetic styles, eclectic imagery and brilliant color palettes. Curator and owner Nicole Royse has selected artists based on their distinguished styles, accomplished work, and distinctive voice, each creating and embodying elements style. This exhibition showcases the work of eight noteworthy artists based in both Arizona and Texas including Angel Cabrales, Charmagne Coe, ColorOrgy, David Allan Paul, Dan Pederson, James Anthony Peters, Daniel Shepherd, and Marilyn Szabo. Their work is original, captivating, pushing boundaries and redefining their mediums in contemporary art today.
Elements of Style: Color, Line & Texture offers an eclectic selection of work that includes collage, drawing, mixed media, painting, and photography. "Touch of Pop" the joint exhibition of Nigel Clouse & Benjam

Royse Contemporary is excited to announce Touch of Pop, the joint exhibition of artists Nigel Clouse and Benjamin Goens. This exhibition will showcase the latest work of these talented artists, highlighting a dynamic selection of pop surrealistic digital composites and multi layered mixed media stencil paintings infused with Pop Art. “Popular Art was dominant movement in early 1960s American art, widely recognized and is easily accessible with diverse audiences around the world,” states Curator, Nicole Royse. Elaborating further stating “its use of common household objects, consumer products, and forms of media, creates mass appeal not to mention greatly inspired both artists and the overall direction of their work.”
Nigel Clouse is a Phoenix based artist known for his pop surrealistic digital composites incorporating femme fatales, pop culture references, and dystopian themes. He combines graphic elements to form alternate realities where the fabled American Dream exists only in myth. His work is based upon a childhood spent in a section of the American Midwest commonly referred to as the Rust Belt. The rural landscape of his youth is juxtaposed with the urban environments he currently inhabits working for corporate America. “My work is influenced by classic film, literature, television, science, technology, and social commentary, who goes on to elaborate further stating “I create art to share my misanthropic perspective with the world and to provide social commentary on personal experiences.” Clouse received his Bachelors of Art in Digital Design from the Art Academy of Cincinnati and he has worked as a creative for over a decade in the American Southwest.
Benjamin Goens, known as Benjam is a stencil artist based in Gilbert Arizona. He creates mixed media original artwork utilizing hand cut stencils, oil, and aerosol paints on canvas. His process includes up to 20 hand-cut stencil layers in a single image, used to apply vast colors of aerosol paints as well as various other mediums to create photorealistic tonal gradations in his imagery. He received his Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree in Art History and traveled extensively across Europe to study the art of classical antiquity and European masters. “I have always held a fascination for hip-hop culture, graffiti, and the evolution of street art which inspired him to begin cutting his first stencils in 2008.” Goens goes on to say “it wasn’t until 2014 that he began further experimenting with stencils and ultimately production of his own multilayered artwork, learning to cut intricate stencils to create detailed depictions of his subjects.” In 2018, he was a recipient of the inaugural Carmody Foundation Grant Project and recently participated in the inaugural Phoenix Mural Festival. Benjam has shown his work extensively in both solo and group exhibitions in the Phoenix metropolitan area and his work can be found in galleries and private collections around the world.

Royse Contemporary is proud to present The Echo of Nature, the solo exhibition of Daniel Shepherd. For the last four years, Shepherd and Royse have collaborated on exciting exhibitions that showcase the artist's unique and often outlandish vintage collages captivating new audiences along the way. For this exhibition the artist wanted to work with something considered universally beautiful, flowers.
This striking body of work captures that essence, offering a familiar recall running through the work along with the artist's intention and desire to highlight the pure beauty of nature. Curator, Nicole Royse stated "I am thrilled to bring this riveting collection of Shepherd's new collage work to Royse Contemporary. She goes on to say "that over the last several years of working with Mr. Shepherd his work has continued to evolve while maintaining its energy, distinctive voice and element of surprise that engages his viewer's senses.""Flowers are something that folks deliberately bring into their lives because they are beautiful, or give as a gift to someone they love," states Shepherd who goes on to say "Nature echoes over and over again, the same flowers bloom, the leaves fall and return, the snow falls then melts into our water, year after year." The artist utilizes many of the same images in his work, which he presents in various ways as a sort of tribute to the repetition of nature that is found throughout life.
His process begins with ripped faded scraps of paper, graceful yet unusual images that he then collages onto a smooth freshly sanded wood or repurposed, hand distressed vintage book cover. His organic style allows him to combine a variety of images to create original and interesting work. Producing his collages entirely from repurposed materials really excites Shepherd because he enjoys the idea of these "things" which once served a specific use now years later reused for something completely different.Shepherd is a self-taught artist based in Phoenix who is creating fascinating abstract paintings and collages. His work is included in private collections around the world and he has exhibited his work extensively throughout Arizona and Palm Springs California. Recently Shepherd has exhibited at Chartreuse Gallery, {9} The Gallery, Bokeh Gallery, Willo North Gallery, Off Madison Avenue and his work is currently represented by Royse Contemporary.His work has been featured in numerous publications both online and in print including Phoenix Magazine, Visual Art Source, Arizona Foothills Magazine, Phoenix New Times, Yab Yum Music & Art and Localrevibe.
"NGC 4594 (The Sombrero Galaxy)" the solo exhibition of Angel Cabrales

Royse Contemporary is proud to present the solo exhibition of Angel Cabrales entitled NGC 4594 (The Sombrero Galaxy). The title refers to the actual spiral galaxy located in the constellation Virgo with a bright nucleus, an unusually large central bulge, and a prominent dust lane in its inclined disk, which gives it the appearance of a sombrero. "This galaxy is a focal point in my exploration in thoughts and needs to identify as an American of Mexican heritage in a world where political and social climates push cultural identity to the extremes and I find myself feeling out of place," states Cabrales. "These ideas and feelings are something many can relate to and Cabrales has once again created artwork that blends social and political concerns of today while beginning an important dialogue with his viewers," states Curator Nicole Royse.This exhibition features an enthralling new collection of mixed media abstract paintings and sculptures. Through his work the artist searches for a cultural home where he doesn't have to prove how American or how Mexican he is, and just live in the Spanglish amalgamation he grew up in. He utilizes industrial design and commercialism while approaching such tough topics through a powerful and often satirical lens. Cabrales has created laser cut resin "paintings" which the artist says, "track my voyage to self-discovery as I chart the Heavens in my search for NGC 4594 a place to call a celestial home of my imagination," going on to say "becoming a home to my feeling of displacement and want for a place to call my own."Cabrales is a multi-media sculptor who is creating dynamic sculptures, interactive installations and digital imagery. He received his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Arizona State University and his Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of North Texas. Currently he is the Visiting Assistant Professor in Sculpture at the University of Texas at El Paso, as well as a mentor in The Low Residency Masters of Fine Arts Program for the School of Art Institute of Chicago.He has exhibited his artwork extensively in Texas and Arizona, having his work featured in both solo and group exhibitions at renowned institutions and galleries including most recently at the MAC, Texas Biennial, Galeria 409, the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum, The Latino Cultural Center of Dallas, Brownsville Fine Arts Museum, El Paso Museum of Art and AMBOS Project (a intervention collaboration). Royse Contemporary in Scottsdale, Arizona and Ro2 Gallery in Dallas, Texas currently represent Cabrales' work. Royse Contemporary is excited to announce If These Walls… the joint exhibition of renowned artists Thomas Breeze Marcus and Douglas Miles. This exhibition will showcase the latest work from both of these talented artists, highlighting their artistry, voice, culture and dynamic energy they bring to the contemporary art world.
Thomas Breeze Marcus is a fine artist, designer and public mural artist originally from the Tohono O'odham tribe growing up on the Salt River Reservation just east of Scottsdale, he has been painting in Phoenix since the early 1990’s. In 2014 Marcus was commissioned by the Heard Museum on the east outside wall of the Heard's Steele Auditorium, titled, "The Power of Mother Earth. His mural work can be found throughout Phoenix and his fine art is currently represented by Blue Rain Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Marcus favors aerosol and paint markers to create his intricate works, utilizing a vibrant color palette and captivating and familiar subject matter. “Marcus is a skilled artist talented artist whose works reflect the woven stories of our lives, reminiscent of patterns found in traditional Tohono O’odham basketry,” states curator Nicole Royse.
Douglas Miles is a fine artist, designer, activist, and the creator/founder of Apache Skateboards, Douglas Miles. Miles brings a 21st century voice to what it means to be a Native American artist exploring his heritage, pop culture and ideas of fine art. A veteran artist, Douglas Miles has been busy creating both fine art and street art while currently living with his wonderful family on the Apache San Carlos Reservation. His art celebrates his heritage while at the same time reflecting upon the realities of his life on the reservation. Miles favors aerosol and paint markers preferring to create on found everyday objects from the reservation, which he feels further connects him with his community, his heritage, while elevating everyday objects to fine art status. “Miles creates striking hand drawn and cut stencils, which he applies throughout his work and that really highlight his skill and artistry,” states Curator Nicole Royse.

Royse Contemporary is excited to announce the solo exhibition of artist Fred Tieken entitled The TIEKEN Zone - No Rules Apply! This exhibition will feature a comprehensive selection of his latest paintings that showcase the artist's eye for composition, diverse subject matter and poignant commentary, states curator Nicole Royse. Fresh off his exhibition at LA Art Show with bG Gallery, this marks Tieken's first exhibition in Arizona in over a year. Tieken recently opened Tieken Gallery LA, a vibrant, contemporary art gallery in Los Angeles, CA this past fall.
Tieken's artwork is expressionistic and painterly in style, highlighting personal subjects and experiences through irony and wit. The artist's love of color, bold lines, and mixed media are seamlessly blended with his wry social observations and smart symbolism. Tieken's art allows the viewer a brief glimpse into his colorful and dazzling world where one senses a pure excitement and passion for life, art, and music. "Painting is like baring my soul to the world," states Tieken whose level of emotional commitment is beautifully and vividly demonstrated in his work.
"Pan Door" the solo exhibition of Charmagne Coe

Royse Contemporary is excited to announce the solo exhibition of mixed-media artist Charmagne Coe entitled Pan Door, featuring a vast selection of her surreal drawings and paintings that combine watercolor, ink and pastel. The artworks are fantastical, and yet they are also rooted in the material and immaterial substance of daily life and history. The artist’s most recent work rawly pushes the limits of her skills and media. Coe reveals that her work expresses the vulnerable human experience of opening doors in oneself, and thus discovering new facets that can be strange at first, revealing, and quite verdant. “Coe’s unhindered style, luminous color palette, sinuous lines, and delicate forms lure the viewer in where they can further examine and reflect upon themselves,” states curator Nicole Royse.
The artist employs spirit drawing/writing and meditation while working in order to be fluid and receptive, resulting in work she terms 'expressive surrealism'. In weaving elements, characters, and environments together, Coe illustrates the tangible and intangible ways people connect to one another, society and their natural world. The driving forces of her work are love and egalitarianism. When viewing the works featured in Pan Door, it feels as if one is opening doors: “Behind each one you may see the shifting of a paradigm, the rich dynamics within a relationship, accepted pain and/or the pursuit of joy,” elaborates Coe.
Coe received her Bachelors of Arts degree from Northern Arizona University in elementary education with a minor in fine arts. She has exhibited at the ASU Institute for Humanities Research, Arizona Opera, Center on Contemporary Art in Seattle, the Coconino Center for the Arts and most recently at Chartreuse Gallery. Her work has been included in numerous publications including Utne Reader, Luxe Interiors + Design, Creative Quarterly, and gate-fold album art design for ambient group, Pausal.
"It's Nature's Way" the solo exhibition of Constance McBride

Royse Contemporary is excited to announce the solo exhibition of mixed-media artist Constance McBride entitled It’s Nature’s Way, featuring an impressive body of work highlighting the artist’s interest in the cycle of life, the human form and the natural world. The exhibition will feature a selection of sculptures, pastel drawings, and paintings. When asked about her work McBride simply stated, “I work primarily with clay, it’s made from decomposed granite and minerals of the earth and it holds memories,” she goes on to say, “It’s malleable and I like to think we are too; not without conviction but flexible enough to ride the waves of change and open enough to accept the results of them.”
It’s Nature’s Way highlights a charismatic collection of work which the artist said is “inspired by living really close to the desert; it’s an ever present influence on me. I’m intrigued by all the diverse vegetation - bits and pieces of debris are picked up and saved in my studio.” McBride further elaborates that “the desert is continually expanding, contracting, and redefining itself; so are we, it’s a shared pursuit of survival.” McBride brilliantly sculpts the human form as well as nature in a unique and beautiful way, filled with symbolism and exquisite craftsmanship, states curator Nicole Royse, who goes on to say that “what I love most about McBride’s work is her keen eye for detail, her graceful touch with the clay and her distinct voice that she is able to share through her strong imagery.”

Through the raw and expressive work of Pederson combined with the powerful dialogue of Nguyen paintings, this unique pairing of artists is stimulating yet harmonious, states owner and curator Nicole Royse. Nguyen has said that his feels his work reflects a "Dialogue that is represented by the usage of abstract brush strokes, forms, and lines, once incorporated, the works express my questions and concerns about humanity and nature." Pederson's work offers a modern simplicity that has a feeling of immediacy about it, he states "I use layers to help create new textures and movement, while I explore different ways to express myself, through traditional media, such as wood and canvas, as well as ephemeral media i.e. paper, found objects."

"Joint Exhibition of Alexandra Bowers & Cherie Buck-Hutchison"

Royse Contemporary is excited to announce the joint exhibition of Arizona Artists Alexandra Bowers and Cherie Buck-Hutchison, showcasing intricate wood burnings of Sonoran desert flora and fauna, as well as digitally composited photography reflecting upon the southwest landscape. Alexandra Bowers and Cherie Buck-Hutchison work and lives share the common bond and influence of the southwest. Bowers latest wood burned studies that have been inspired by her recent data collected from the surrounding natural environment in the Sonoran desert. Bowers creates delicate artworks with her tool of choice wood, adorning unique and intricate hand burned drawings of local flora and fauna. During her nature explorations, she extensively studies and records her findings, which she then utilizes to produce wood burned studies of plants and animals. Her artwork pushes the pre-conceived ideas of wood burning as "craft-based" form of art making, into fine art. Trained in the arts she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Herberger Institute For Design and the Arts, Arizona State University 2012. She has exhibited her artwork across the valley including Legend City Studios, Made Boutique, PhiCA, Practical Art, Shemer Art Center, and Tempe Center for the Arts.
Buck-Hutchison'swork features digitally composited photos manipulated to create meaning relevant to contemporary issues. She is revisiting her personal history "to divine a feminine narrative within patriarchal religious practices while juxtaposing dual imagery with the intent to create a space for female religious leadership where currently there may be none." Buck-Hutchison composites decades, uniting relatives from the 1950s through the 1970s; she creates a magical southwest of the future where women enjoy the same religious privileges and responsibilities as men.Traditionally trained, she received her Bachelors of Fine Art in Intermedia from Arizona State University. She has exhibited her artwork in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Arizona at various galleries including Eye Lounge, Vision Gallery, the monOrchid, ASU Night Gallery, ASU Step Gallery, The Shemer Art Center, and the Phoenix Art Museum.
