James Anthony Peters

About the Artist...

James Anthony Peters is a Scottsdale based artist who creates a wide variety of mixed media works. As he sets to create each piece, his work mirrors the personal explorations of life, conflict and happiness. Sources of inspiration in his work are as diverse as the materials he uses to create. From land topography to industrial or man-made constructions all produce ideas that are infinite. Peters enjoys incorporating elements of surprise within his works asking the viewer to move beyond their assumptions about “What art is” and address their own emotional responses towards the work.

When asked about his work and inspiration Peters explains, “I imagine, at the point of a pen, the stroke of a brush or a blade into a piece of wood, I have an idea. But how that translates onto a physical surface will only reveal itself as it evolves. There’s this sublime understanding of the perceived and the real. I am grounded in the modern classics, grounded in the minimalist style, as I continue the pursuit to make it my own.” His latest collection of work blends his love of sculpture with that of painting, with subtle pops of color juxtaposed with unique textures. The result is minimalist abstraction that entice the viewer to take closer look.

He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Woodworking/ Furniture Design/ Ceramics from John Herron School of Fine Art in Indianapolis, Indiana. He received his Master of Fine Arts in Ceramic/ Sculpture/ Woodworking from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. Peters is currently the Museum Exhibits Designer, Fabricator, and Installer at the Mesa Historical Museum in Mesa, AZ.
